American Veal Association Statement On USDA Action At Bushways Packing Plant

The following statement is attributed to Chip Lines-Burgess, President of the American Veal Association (AVA).

The veal industry has an ethical obligation to provide for the proper treatment and well-being of the animals in our care. The treatment of calves depicted in the videos taken at Bushways Packing Plant in Vermont are unacceptable and not consistent with the standards of the American Veal Association (AVA), the Veal Quality Assurance Program or federal law.

The AVA supports the swift and strong action of the USDA and the Vermont Department of Agriculture. We do not condone animal abuse and expect that the USDA and Vt. Department of Agriculture will determine the appropriate action once they conclude their investigation.

its always encouraging to see people make such sweeping generalizations about things they dont fully comprehend. not all farms and farmers are out to hurt animals for profit, and the broad boycotting of a way of life (farming) that has been essential to the collective survival of both animals and humans together does not bring about the desired change and seems to only hurt the small farmers who care and work harder then anyone else in america.

I cannot fathom how people can enjoy torturing innocent animals, what cowards. I pray karma comes back to haunt every one of the monsters in the video. Why in todays society with so many food choices do we still eat baby calves??? Baby animals are hellpless and defenseless, we stoop to an all time low when we support this. PLEASE anyone reading this..take a stand, start the process to BAN VEAL. Enough is enough. This is not going to stop, they cannot be monitored 24 hrs a day.The only solution is to shut down the veal industry.

I read all the the comments written, and say, that the reason these horrors exist is that people support it with every piece of meat they eat. Try to look at your diet every day, make compassionate choices - Every major food market has wonderful meatless foods, ready to eat meals, dairyless milks, yogurts and Iced treats that taste great! Even John Robbins of Baskin-Robbins has made the change to Vegan, and he comes from a family of ice cream makers - he wrote "Diet for a New America" to have everyone become aware of the horrors of the dairy industry. Talk to your families - I have hope for the next generation - that they will be non-violent, vegetarian/vegan - and will have a deep concern for the environment.

The AVA condemning abuse at veal slaughterhouses is like the SS condemning concentration camps that abuse prisoners on their way to the gas ovens. Don't be disingenuous.
You profit from a brutal industry. I don't eat veal or any beef at all, nor do I buy commercial milk for my family. You don't get a penny of my money, but you do have my undying enmity.

So would it then be acceptable to HSUS for a 10 day old calf to travel to Bushway and walk to it’s own fate of being skinned alive?"

The only "obligation" the veal industry can undertake that is "ethical" is to ban veal production. You are either in denial or just simply don't care about animal suffering. You make your living in a sadistic industry, there's nothing redeeming about. it darkens the soul of humankind.

Why does it ALWAYS take an undercover video to expose the torture and abuse of animals in the meat industry? Time and time again, the federally subsidized meat industry proves itself untrustworthy and unable to adhere to humane treatment of animals. A video is a mere snapshot of the misery inherent to these industries- for animals and for people. Our fellow human beings are turned into killers. Animals are tortured. Authority turns a blind eye. Shoppers put plastic-wrapped bloody slices of a calves into their carts. A video provides an easy place to point our fingers. It provides individuals for us to act swiftly and strongly against, but anyone who supports this industry- anyone who profits from the bodies of calves in any way- shares the responsibility. We all contribute to our collective karma.

You're only disappointed that there was video footage of the horrors taking place - even under the "watchful" eye of a USDA Inspector. These animals are just dollar signs on hooves - you don't care unless caught redhanded.. God only knows what goes on in slaughterhouses that do not have a USDA Inspector...

Shouldn't the USDA inspector that was on site be fired???
The company owner Frank Perretta denied cruelty charges and said he had not seen the video the Free Press reported.
I say we should boycott VEAL. I am considering boycotting beef altogether I am so sick of seeing how we Americans abuse the animals in the farm industry. Where is the humanity?

I am glad you closed this scum operation down...I saw the footage of those poor defenseless animals being tortured...it was horrifying and made me cry.

I can only hope that those responsible get skinned alive...
