Body condition scoring (BCS) is a practice that should be carried out
at the weaning of the calf crop along with pregnancy checking and cow
culling. Body Condition Scores are indicators of the cows’ nutritional
condition.

Weaning time and the collection of weaning weight is the last piece of
data needed to complete 2009 SPA (standardized performance analysis)
production measures. Data in Table 1 below is an example of the primary
information and calculations needed.

Predicted financial returns for 2007 to 2016 were simulated using
production data from the King Ranch and projected cattle prices by
month within year from CattleFax. Three calving seasons were compared:
spring (Feb 1 to Apr 15), fall (Sep 15 to Dec 1), and dual (both fall
and spring).

The month of October is traditionally the time when “weaning” takes

As always, our aim is to let you know what management decisions would
have a positive impact on your bottom line based on our research. Each
year is dif ferent and has its own challenges. Too hot, too cold, too
dry, too wet… you get the picture.

Spring calving herds across the Midwest and Southwest will soon be
planning to wean the calves. Some producers may wean the calves from
young or thin cows during September in order to regain some body
condition before winter adds to the nutrient requirements.

Production records are essential in evaluating the performance of the
cow herd and aiding in making selection decisions. With proper record
keeping, evaluations can be made on the reproductive, productive and
financial status of the cow herd.
