World wheat use for 2009/10 is projected slightly up 0.2 million tons this month, while feed use is up 1.3 million. Wheat feed and residual use for 2009/10, which includes losses, is increased in Russia 0.5 million tons to 18.0 million, due to increased production.

National Agricultural Statistics Service’s (NASS) September Small Grains–2009 Summary reported all wheat production at 2,220 million bushels in 2009, up 36 million bushels from the September forecast, but down 279 million bushels from 2008.

U.S. wheat ending stocks for 2009/10 are projected 121 million bushels higher this month as increased production and lower expected use more than offset a 10-million-bushel reduction in carryin.

World wheat production in 2009/10 is forecast at 663.7 million tons, up 4.4 million this month. Half of the increase has occurred in the EU-27, where wheat production is forecast up 2.2 million tons to reach 138.5 million.

Total projected supplies for 2009/10, at 2,961 million bushels, are unchanged from August, but 29 million bushels above 2008/09. Higher beginning stocks more than offset lower production and imports year to year.

Domestic:  In July, wheat prices were mixed as the pace of harvest in the northern hemisphere accelerated.  Hard Red Winter (HRW) slipped $2 to $233/ton, Soft Red Winter (SRW) rose $9 to $185/ton, Hard Red Spring (HRS) declined $5 to $261/ton, and Soft White (SWW) was down $11 to $204/ton.

World wheat trade projected for 2009/10 increased 0.6 million tons this month to 121.9 million tons. Based mostly on the pace of imports and consumption in 2008/09, 2009/10 imports are up 0.3 million tons for Syria, 0.2 million each for Turkey and Yemen, and 0.1 million tons for Angola and Nigeria.

Global wheat production in 2009/10 is projected to reach 656.5 million tons, inching up just 0.4 million tons this month.
