The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, a bill that would greatly increase the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's authority and mandate over the food system, was unanimously voted out of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee yesterday, nine months after Dick Durbin (D-IL) introduced the measure.

November 17, 2009 - Fairbury Steaks, Inc. a Fairbury, Neb., establishment, is recalling approximately 90 pounds of fresh ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

A report from the American Meat Institute Foundation (AMIF) indicates
the prevalence of E. coli O157:H7 and infections stemming from the
bacteria have declined dramatically. Since 2000, E. coli incidence in
fresh ground beef products has declined 45% to less than .5%.
