After declining to levels not seen in several years last week, boxed beef cutout values trended higher on light demand and offerings. The rebound was led by middle meats, particularly top butts and light lip-ons.While sellers sought higher money on most items to address their continued poor operating margins, buyers remained cautious about adding inventory during another especially difficult week for the general economy. As a result of this standoff, sales volume was very low, with a large package of Choice flats the only substantial volume reported for any cut item this week.Part of this package delivered out front and was also the only notable volume in forward business for the session.Beef trimmings were generally steady on light demand and offerings.Fed cattle and blended grinds were also generally steady for the week.
For the week:Choice and Select rib primal 8.00 higher; Choice and Select chuck primal 4.00 higher; Choice and Select round primal generally steady; Choice and Select loin primal 5.00 to 6.00 higher;Beef trimmings 1.00 higher; Fed cattle and blended grinds generally steady.
Composite of Boxed Beef Cutout Values: Choice 600/900# carcasses up 3.26 at 135.47; Select 600/900# carcasses up 3.57 at 134.12.
