Benefits of organic meat and produce vague, research says

Organic meat and produce is not any healthier for consumers than conventional or non-organic foods despite the higher costs, according to new research by Stanford University.

“People choose to buy organic foods for many different reasons. One of them is perceived health benefits,” said Crystal Smith-Spangler, who led the research team from Stanford and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care.

“Our patients, our families ask about, ‘Well, are there health reasons to choose organic food in terms of nutritional content or human health outcomes?’”

The researchers looked at 237 studies that compared either the health of people who ate organic or conventional foods, or, more commonly, nutrient and contaminant levels in the foods such as bacterial, fungal or pesticide contamination.

The foods included organic and non-organic meats, poultry, eggs, milk, fruits vegetables and grains.

The researchers found there was no difference in the amount of vitamins in plant or animal products produced organically and conventionally – and the only nutrient difference was slightly more phosphorous in the organic products.

The research did find that more than one third of conventional produce had detectable pesticide residues, compared with 7 percent of organic produce. Organic pork and chicken were 33 percent less likely to carry bacteria resistant to three or more antibiotics than conventionally raised meat.

The researchers said it was uncommon for either organic or conventional foods to exceed the allowable limits for pesticides, so it is unclear whether a difference in residues would have an effect on consumers’ health.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG), an environmental organization that focuses on public health and the environment, has criticized the study and believe the differences are much greater than the study suggests.

Other scientists believe more research is needed to fully explore the potential health and safety differences between organic and conventional foods.

The nutritional benefits were not clear but the reduced exposure to pesticides and antibiotics was stated as a
benefit. I am a cattle producer who buys organic fruits and vegetables. Do not stick your head in the ground and
hope all these people who are always preaching organic food and humane animal practices go away. We must
continue to improve our product and meet market demands. Adapt or Die!

I agree with you !! and there are news sites that are asking if this is true or not ,
Flawed organic foods study really just a media psyop to confuse the public about organics while pushing GMOs

This is exactly the type of article that was being put out to the media by the Tobacco Industry in the 50's.
It attempts to create the illusion of mis-information on the health of Organic, for the OBVIOUS benefit of
factory farms. My comment here is not related to the economy of farming--there is no doubt we need
factory farms, and they are NOT the great evil some in the Organic Movement consider them to
be...However, this media approach is has the potential of doing great harm. Objective scientists DO KNOW
that consumption of hormone laden and antibiotic laden meats will have very negative effects on humans,
compared to meats with no hormones and no antibiotics in them. This is just the tip of the iceberg.

Stanford is not the tobacco industry.

I co-host Food Freedom Radio on AM950, in the Twin Cities. We are live Saturdays at 8. We need to connect consumers directly with producers. Create our own economy. On Sept 22, we are talking about antibotics and I stumbled on this site.

What if we could feed ourselves, build our houses, care for our children and enjoy life in such a way that even if the worst case economic story came true, we would have resiliency.

If you're concerned about "hormone laden" beef, I guess tofu, beans and bread must scare the pants off of you.

Mr. Volker,

Please provide the references to the studies produced by these objective scientists you mention. If there were such a product as hormone laden and antibiotic laden meats in the market place (and there is not, although there are naturally occurring hormones and antibiotics in most everything we eat) and this is harmful to our health, why is our life expectancy increasing?

"Merchants of Doubt" are hired by many. The tobacco and other industries understand that studies must come out of another hole than their own to get any integrity traction. I am not saying these Stanford authors were paid to produce a certain report, but if you were cold, tired and hungry - or just looking to keep your academic job, you would also consider signing on the dotted line. People, or better put, humans need a piece of the trillion dollar pies.

Beef is NOT allowed to contain any adulterants. That means it cannot include residues of anything fed to the animal, which includes but is not limited to hormones and antibiotics. Beef and other meats MAY include labeled ingredients such as marinades or tenderizers such as fruit juices, condiments, etc.

BTW, information I've received from Dr. (not sure of what) Mercola include solicitation to buy his wares. So....can we trust HIS claims against others as 'untainted by greed, or at least avarice'???
