Total cheese output (excluding cottage cheese) was 845 million pounds, 4.4 percent above September 2008 but 0.5 percent below August 2009.

Italian type cheese production totaled 351 million pounds, 3.4 percent above September 2008 and 0.4 percent above August 2009.

American type cheese production totaled 341 million pounds, 6.4 percent above September 2008 but 1.1 percent below August 2009.

Butter production was 94.6 million pounds, 21.9 percent below September 2008 and 6.2 percent below August 2009.

Dry Milk Powders: (comparisons with September 2008) Nonfat dry milk, human --- 87.1 million pounds, up 1.8 percent. Skim milk powders --- 12.6 million pounds, down 67.6 percent.

Whey products: (comparisons with September 2008) Dry whey, total --- 86.9 million pounds, up 1.1 percent. Lactose, human and animal --- 58.6 million pounds, down 0.3 percent. Whey protein concentrate, total --- 34.6 million pounds, up 4.5 percent.

Frozen products: (comparisons with September 2008) Ice cream, Regular (hard) --- 74.3 million gallons, down 2.1 percent. Ice cream, Lowfat (total) --- 31.2 million gallons, up 4.1 percent.
