Ohio voters approved a constitutional amendment in yesterday’s election to create a Livestock Care Standards Board. With nearly all precincts reporting, the ballot question was supported by 64% of the voters, with 36% in opposition.
Issue 2 was drafted and supported by an Ohio agricultural coalition in response to threats from the Humane Society of the United States to dictate how food animals are housed and handled through legislation and/or ballot measures. The 13-member board created as a result of the amendment’s passage will provide a mechanism for determining and enforcing guidelines for the care and well-being of livestock and poultry. Board members will have the authority to ensure the quality, safety and availability of locally produced food in Ohio .
The Ohioans for Livestock Care Political Action Committee released the following statement in response to passage of Issue 2: “Passage of Issue 2 is a win for everyone who acknowledges the essential relationship between excellent farm animal care and a safe, affordable, locally grown food supply. Voters agree with Ohio ’s farm community and our diverse base of supporters - decisions about food and farming should be made in Ohio , by Ohioans.”
People serving on the board will include the state agriculture director, family farmers and ranchers, veterinarians, a representative from a local humane society and consumers.
