The number of cattle on feed on September 1, 2009 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.05 million head, down 2 percent from a year ago but up 7 percent from August 1, 2009. Placements during August totaled 550,000 head, up 6 percent from a year ago and 15 percent above July 2009 placements of 480,000 head. Marketings during August totaled 405,000 head, 6 percent below August 2008 and 14 percent below July 2009. Other disappearance was 15,000 head, up 5,000 from a year ago and up 5,000 from the previous month. The percent of August placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 11 percent; 600-699 pounds, 18 percent; 700-799 pounds, 32 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 39 percent.
