The number of cattle on feed on June 1, 2009 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.08 million head, down 5 percent from a year ago and down 5 percent from May 1, 2009.Placements during May totaled 345,000 head, down 16 percent from a year ago but 5 percent above April 2009 placements of 330,000 head.Marketings during May totaled 425,000 head, 13 percent below May 2008 but 4 percent above April 2009.

Other disappearance was 20,000 head, unchanged from a year ago and unchanged from the previous month.The percent of May placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 19 percent; 600-699 pounds, 20 percent; 700-799 pounds, 32 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 29 percent.
