National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson today addressed the 2009 Iowa Farmers Union Convention.
Speaking to Farmers Union members from across the state, Johnson touched on a wide range of issues affecting farmers and ranchers not just in Iowa, but across the nation.
"We need both short-term lifelines and new long-term policies that allow our nation's dairy and independent hog producers to stay afloat during these incredibly tough times, legislation that will address the unique role agriculture is capable of playing when it comes to confronting global climate change and increasing the use and production of fuels from our farms, agricultural market reform that will increase competition and lessen concentration, and health care reform that takes into account the unique needs of rural Americans," Johnson said.
Johnson said NFU is committed to working with Congress to address these challenges and called on Farmers Union members to reach out to their elected officials.
"The strength of Farmers Union is members like you," Johnson said. "We must proactively, constructively and continuously engage policy makers to advance the opportunities and solutions that you develop at the grassroots level."
