Nebraska Cattle On Feed Down 5 Percent

LINCOLN, Neb., May 22, 2009 -- Nebraska feedlots, with capacities of 1,000 or more head, contained 2.27 million cattle on feed on May 1, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, Nebraska Field Office. The inventory was down 5 percent from last year.

Placements in feedlots during April totaled 350,000 head, up 3 percent from 2008. This equals the April 1992 record, the same year the data series began.

Marketings of fed cattle during April totaled 395,000 head, down 1 percent from last year. Other disappearance during April totaled 5,000 head, compared to 10,000 head in 2008.
