Reuters reports on Tuesday that the CME will not limit the level of vomitoxin in CBOT corn deliveries.

Vomitoxin is a concern in the eastern Corn Belt where wet weather has delayed harvest and kept corn from drying. Mary Haffenberg, spokeswoman for the CME group made the announcement after discussing the issue with customers. CME is the parent company of the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT). Other sources commented that the levels of vomitoxin aren’t as high as previously expected.

Vomitoxin, which is found in moldy corn, can make livestock sick. The U.S. Food and Drug Administartion limits the level of vomitoxin for swine at no more than 5 parts per million or 10 parts per million for cattle.

Vomitoxin does not affect corn used for ethanol, but would influence the use of distillers’ dried grain, a byproduct of ethanol used as livestock feed.
