According to an article from EarthTimes.com, Taiwan Department of Health (DOH) Minister Taung Chih-liang plans to lift Taiwan’s ban on importing US bone-in beef by the end of October.

The announcement from the DOH could come as soon as Friday and the ban will be lifted in two stages. The first stage allows bone-in beef from cattle under 30 months old with export permits and safety guarantees from the US Department of Agriculture.

The ban, put in place in 2003, was issued to protect Taiwan from mad cow disease concerns. The ban has consumer groups in Taiwan concerned because bone-in beef carries a higher risk for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) also known as mad cow disease.
