With the announcement that Taiwan will import U.S. ground beef, the Taipei Times reports that nine major importers have joined a Taipei City Government organized association refusing to accept U.S. ground beef, intestines and spinal cords.

The Taipei City Government approached 41 beef importers asking them to prevent U.S. ground beef from being imported. More than 1,000 restaurants in Taipei have also joined the association rejecting U.S. beef, spinal cord and intestines.

Beef importers in Taipei are concerned with the safety of U.S. ground beef even with the rules in place limiting the beef imported to cows under 30 months old. Importers will continue to reject U.S. beef until consumer concern disappears.

U.S. beef exporters see the current restrictions as a transitional phase. Eventually they would like to move from only beef less than 30 months old to a full market opening.
