Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.49 million head on July 1, down 6 percent from a year ago. According to the monthly report released by the Texas Field Office, the estimate was down 5 percent from the June 1 level. Producers placed 380,000 head in commercial feedlots during June, down 17 percent from a year ago, and down 16 percent from the May 2009 total.
Texas commercial feeders marketed 490,000 head during June, up 2 percent from last year but down 4 percent from last month.
On July 1, there were 2.10 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 84 percent of the state’s total. The number on feed across the area was down 6 percent from last year and down 4 percent from the June total.
June placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 332,000 head, down 17 percent from the May total. Marketings were down 4 percent from last month to 415,000 head.
