A 58-year-old Topeka area man has pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a cattle fraud scheme.
U.S. Attorney Lanny Welch said Tuesday that Dennis Stebbins of Overbrook pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and money laundering.
Stebbins admitted to defrauding the owners of J Bar Ranch in Jefferson County from 2003 to 2008 by inflating the average weight and cost of the cattle he bought for the ranch. Prosecutors said he also falsely claimed that the animals had been examined by a veterinarian.
A sentencing date was not announced. Stebbins faces a maximum penalty of 30 years in federal prison and a fine up to $1 million on the conspiracy charge.
