In the West, unusually warm weather prevails. Warmth is encouraging Northwestern winter grain growth, while dry conditions favor cotton harvesting and other fieldwork in California and the Southwest.

On the Plains, mild, dry weather is promoting winter wheat development and fieldwork, including summer crop harvesting and late-season wheat planting.

In the Corn Belt, cool, showery weather is limiting fieldwork east of the Mississippi River. However, mild, dry weather favors an acceleration of corn and soybean harvesting in the western Corn Belt.

In the South, warm, dry weather continues to promote an acceleration of fieldwork, except in some of the wettest areas of eastern Texas and the five Delta States. By November 1, the Delta cotton harvest ranged from 14 to 34% complete, while 2004-08 state averages ranged from 75 to 94%.

Outlook: For the remainder of the week, mostly dry weather will prevail across the southern half of the U.S. Farther north, cool conditions and scattered rain and snow showers will affect the Great Lakes and Northeastern States. Meanwhile, wet weather will arrive in the Pacific Northwest, where precipitation totals may exceed 5 inches. Significant high-elevation snow will spread as far east as the northern Rockies and the northern Intermountain West. In advance of the Western storminess, unusual autumn warmth will spread eastward, reaching the Plains during the mid- to late-week period and the eastern half of the U.S. during the weekend. The NWS 6- to 10-day outlook for November 9-13 calls for above-normal temperatures across the eastern half of the U.S., while cooler-than-normal weather will prevail from California to the central and southern Rockies. Meanwhile, below-normal precipitation in the Northeast will contrast with wetter-than normal conditions in the Pacific Northwest and the nation’s mid-section, including the Mississippi Valley.
