It is another great week in the cattle industry! Calves, stockers, feeders, and fats all seem to be edging higher, some more than others, but at the moment the trend is the same. Our overall economy in appearance seems to have maybe made a little bump up, but with all the activity in the political arena, it is kind of hard to know.Giving away billions of dollars would have to make a government feel good about itself, would it not?
The spring weather is coming and it will certainly boost spirits. The activity at the stores seems to have come up with the temperature as well as everyone possibly just wanting to get out of the rut.More and more folks seem to be driving around town and at least window shopping, if not actually spending a little money.Of course, with the government setting the example it is setting on spending money, many people will probably follow suit.
Grass cattle are in great demand, and for the most part in light supply! Many stocker cattle are bringing $10.00 or more than what they were just a few weeks ago! Judging by the futures board, many of those cattle look like they could certainly work, if the basis does not fall out of whack.Next falls contracts are all at or above $100.00, and given some more moisture and higher feed costs, maybe we will be right back where we were last year? It is good to see a strong market, but hopefully it will not go overboard.
The beef market at the moment seems to be edging upward also. For the month of March, cattle that graded under 50% choice brought more money than cattle grading over 80%!What does not make sense is that even with the select grades bringing more money, costs of gain extremely high, and a need to sell the cattle, the fat cattle continue to be fed more days than ever.Even with good genetics, why throw good money in after bad?
Time is going to tell a lot of things. There is supposed to be close monitoring of how the bailout money is used, although when a person looks, our government is trillions of dollars in DEBT!How can someone who cannot balance a checkbook be expected to run a multibillion dollar company, let alone an industry? It would seem that if you wanted to get a car fixed, you would go find a good mechanic, not a lawyer or politician. But of course, billions of dollars can pay for a lot of things and people.
THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR CUSTOMERS!
