When sending in samples, many diagnostic laboratories ask veterinarians to send in a “good history.” Jim Kennedy, DVM, MS, Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, Rocky Ford, Colo., explains just what a good history entails:

  • “Tombstone data” — age, sex, breed, home raised, purchased (where and when), herd size
  • Vaccinations the animal has had — type, what for and when
  • Treatments the animal has had — what, how much and how often
  • Duration of illness
  • Feed and water supply
  • Clinical signs
