USDA does right in scrapping Meatless Monday statement

 Resize text

It’s disturbing when those who are supposed to be advocates for agriculture instead choose to advocate against it. That happened last month just as NCBA kicked off the 2012 Cattle Industry Summer Convention in Denver, Colo. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) issued a release on July 25, expressing support for the “Meatless Mondays” campaign by saying that USDA would work to reduce environmental impacts in the agency’s cafeteria. It was a statement which shows just how out of touch our government is with the difficulties faced by farmers and ranchers who are working hard every day to produce the food which our citizens depend on. The “Meatless Monday” campaign is an effort started by radical animal rights activists whose stated goal is to end the consumption of meat in this country. USDA’s announcement that it would embrace the campaign effort calls into question their commitment to represent the very farmers and ranchers who produce the food for their cafeteria.

USDA, after immediate and significant pressure from NCBA and other grassroots producer groups, retracted the statement, saying it had been released in error “without the proper clearance,” but not before the damage was done. This statement by USDA called into question the environmental practices used by farmers and ranchers who are producing food for this country, despite the fact that many of those same practices are endorsed and funded by USDA agencies through a multitude of conservation programs.

As farmers and ranchers we have a lot on our plates every day when we wake up in the morning. We’re currently facing one of the worst droughts in history with 70 percent of the U.S. cowherd being impacted by drought. Input costs are rising and we’re challenged constantly by extremist groups who would like to put us out of business. That’s what makes USDA’s mistake alarming; we need USDA to support and advocate vigilantly for agriculture. However, this statement also serves as a good demonstration of why we all need to be at the table and why belonging to NCBA is so important. Our staff is constantly on the lookout for any effort to undermine the work we’re doing in this country.

Every day NCBA staff is hard at work advocating for farmers and ranchers. We have boots on the hill forging strong relationships with our elected officials. We’re winning important fights on behalf of our members and our industry and we’re holding government officials accountable for their actions, particularly those actions which pay potentially undermine our efforts to feed the nation.

We all appreciate USDA’s swift action to retract their disappointing statement and making it right by stating publicly that it does not support the “Meatless Monday” campaign, but it’s also a good reminder of why we need to be represented, so we can respond to that which might harm our farms and ranches in fast order. In this case, an attempt by an animal rights extremist group which is spreading fiction to consumers who need to know the importance of beef in a healthy diet. It speaks very highly of our staff who are working tirelessly on behalf of NCBA members and the entire beef industry.

USDA did the right thing by scrapping this statement and acknowledging the important role of America’s farm and ranch families in providing food for the world. USDA denouncing support of the “Meatless Monday” campaign is an important step in correcting misinformation about the safety and sustainability of U.S. beef production.

"It’s disturbing when those who are supposed to be advocates for agriculture instead choose to advocate against
it."

"Meatless Monday"is not the same as "Foodless Monday". Farmers grow vegetarian food too. By revoking their
endorsement of Meatless Monday, the USDA tipped its hand as a tool of the meat industry at the expense of this
nation's produce growers.

Spoken like a true vegan and Peta-HSUS spokesman. They are now strong in the usda. This is a real conflict of interest and a threat to our right to chose what we eat.

Farmers produce fruits and veggies too.......a person does not need meat to survive or to get all the nutrients needed to be perfectly healthy.....In fact I personally am in better shape than I ever have been and this is since I became a Vegan......I feel better, mentally and physically! Also, "Meatless Monday" does not mean "Foodless Monday" and I am sure that one day a week without meat will not kill anyone.......My lord what has happened to the human race????? How can one be so "blind" to the horrific treatment and lack of respect and compassion to the living creatures of this world in which we live???? Animals are not so different from us......they look different yes but they have feelings, they breathe, they show tremendous signs of love and compassion to one another.......more so than some humans!!! People need to WAKE UP and speak up for the animals of this world......It is time for the cruel and inhumane treatment to animals is put to a stop!!

@ Lazarus. Please cite Book, Chapter and verse in the "Christian Bible" where it says someone will "burn in hell" if one consumes "animal products".

I suspect you are very ignorant, especially about the Bible, but perhaps also about nutrition.

You are in danger however, as we are warned in Revelation 22:18 & 19 covers the whole Bible!

You apparently don't know what the Bible says. Take it from someone who has read it from cover to cover repeatedly. I also have a Bachelor's in Biblical Literature.

Rhonda: We treat our food animals far better than any lion treats a zebra or any coyote treats a rabbit. They may have "feelings," but they certainly do not know right from wrong. Look at the chimpanzee attacks in the news in recent years. These are not people with extra hair; they are animals. The only "love and compassion" they have toward one another is in order to raise their young in an instinctive urge to pass on their genes. Most animals kill other animals (Yes, even many of those peace-loving herbivores are killers) with nary a second thought.

May God help YOU! If you want anyone to believe the bible proscribes eating animal products you'd better give the chapter and verse number, and it has to be in the New Testament.

Rhonda,
We also take great care of our cattle. My wife has said more than once that the cows get taken care of better than I do. The cows eat before we do in the winter months. Also our cows are on open range all of their life. They have all the nutrition (food and water) that is needed. Sadly, our cattle are taken better care of than some kids in the is country of ours. Why do we need foster care facilities for children. When a person thinks of that, it is pretty sad that our cows have full nutrition year around, where some kids and people go hungry in our country every day. We are not the enemy, lets work together. From a nutrition standpoint, there are essential amino acids along with a few other nutritional needs that our body needs that does not come from any other source than besides meat. Thanks for your time.

Lazarus: You are very misguided. Did Mary and Joseph go to Hell for sacrificing a dove for Jesus' birth? Did the disciples James and John go to Hell for killing fish? Did Jesus go to Hell for eating fish and serving it to the 5000? I hardly think so.

i don't know why mary, joseph, james john and jesus did not go to hell for breaking one of the 10 commandments , maybe they asked for forgiveness or maybe the bible contradicts itself some how, all i know is that do not kill means do not kill, no ifs ands or buts
