When the Beef Marketing Group (BMG), a vertically aligned marketing arrangement between 19 feed yards in Kansas and Nebraska, entered into a contractual relationship with Kansas Ethanol, LLC, both sides knew they shared a concern for environmental stewardship. For Kansas Ethanol, a result is a focus on efficiency in their operations.
One way that shows is in their careful use — and reuse — of water. “We reuse a large portion of water that comes in,” says Thane Combs, the operations manager. Most of the water they take in is reused immediately; a portion goes through a biological methanator, which converts some of the organic matter into methane gas that helps fuel the distillers grain driers. “Anything we can reuse, gets reused,” Combs says. This is true right down the water used to mop the floor; everything goes right back into the process.
