ALF takes credit for Harris Farms arson fire

 Resize text

Animal rights activists have claimed responsibility for the Sunday arson fire that heavily damaged 14 tractors and several cattle trailers at Harris Farms in Fresno County, California, according to a clearinghouse for activists.

The Animal Liberation Front (ALF), an underground group that the FBI identifies as a domestic terrorist organization, claims to have set the fire that started just before 4 a.m. Sunday at the truck storage area at Harris Farms feedlot. In an e-mail to the Fresno Bee, Harris Farms CEO and Chairman John Harris said the company was “appalled by this senseless, but very alarming attack. I had suspected Animal Liberation Front may have been involved and now they are in fact claiming responsibility for it with multiple details.”

The clearinghouse that distributed the statement claiming credit for the arson is the North American Animal Liberation Press Office, which says it has no direct dealings with underground groups or illegal activity.

According to the statement distributed about the Harris Farms arson, “containers of accelerant were placed beneath a row of 14 trucks with 4 digital timers used to light four of the containers and kerosene-soaked rope carrying the fire to the other 10. We were extremely pleased to see that all 14 trucks ‘were a total loss.’”

Harris told the Fresno Bee the damage was “substantial,” but did not reveal a dollar figure. However, Harris said the attack will not have an effect on the company.

“We are gratified by the support and concern we have received from the public and the outrage this attack has created,” Harris wrote. “We must live in a society that is safe for all and no one can tolerate violence such as this. ALF and similar terrorist groups pose a real threat, and I am confident that the many law enforcement agencies working on this case will bring them to justice soon.”

Read John Harris' statement here.

Harris Farms is one of the largest family-owned agribusinesses in the nation. It is California's largest cattle feeder, beef processor and beef marketer.

California Farm Bureau president Paul Wenger said, “The terrorists who attacked (Harris Farms) must be arrested and prosecuted to the full extent of the law."

Wenger also said animal-welfare groups should become involved in helping to resolve the case.

“We encourage animal-welfare organizations to help authorities find those responsible. If they sit by silently while animal rightists attack law-abiding businesses, they are passively endorsing domestic terrorism,” Wenger said.

“Farmers, ranchers and everyone involved in agriculture do their best to grow food safely and responsibly. They should not have to fear attacks on their property or on themselves for producing products that Americans want,” Wenger said.

The Animal Liberation Front is an international, underground leaderless resistance that engages in illegal direct action in pursuit of animal liberation. The roots of ALF can be traced back to England in the 1960s, and ALF is now active in over 40 countries.

Some activists claim the movement is non-violent, but ALF’s code says any act that furthers the cause of animal liberation, where all reasonable precautions are taken not to harm human or non-human life, may be claimed as an ALF action.

Animal Liberation Front’s stated objectives are:

  • To inflict economic damage on those who profit from the misery and exploitation of animals.
  • To liberate animals from places of abuse, i.e. laboratories, factory farms, fur farms etc., and place them in good homes where they may live out their natural lives, free from suffering.
  • To reveal the horror and atrocities committed against animals behind locked doors, by performing nonviolent direct actions and liberations
  • To take all necessary precautions against harming any animal, human and non-human.
  • Any group of people who are vegetarians or vegans and who carry out actions according to ALF guidelines have the right to regard themselves as part of the ALF.

Well done, ALF. And as for your attempt to drive a wedge between tame and obedient AW and, obviously successful, AR: guys, get up earlier. "law-abiding" .. how is that making what you do and stand for any more ethical? Slavery was "law-abiding" in its heyday. Means nothing. And Jim (Bob), dear boy, may that steak get stuck in your gullet ..

herne the hunter, should become herne the hunted. just like a coyote that is trying to eat my baby calf, i would propose the same type treatment to alf and herne. herne is an uneducated idiot who is a failure in life. his mother left him at a young age and he has mommy issues. weak, uneducated, socially unacceptable, he is the epitome of the nancy pelosi wacko.

I do not condone any acts of violence and terror upon animals, period. This farm merely provides the nations with the beef, that it wants to eat. This ALF/Terrorist group, is just another terrorist group, like the ones that drove planes into the World Trade Center. They could have killed someone and that is a crime. Whereas, consuming beef and meat is not. Have the ALF/Terrorists read the Bible??? Meat is consumed throughout our history, including our Biblical history. And it is our right to consume it. If it's ok with God, than it's ok. Done humanely of course. But what am I saying, the ALF are obviously not in-tune with the teachings of the Bible.

Hi Vickie - Are you honestly equating blowing up a dozen trucks with the carnage of thousands on Sept.11? Really? ?? ***** No, consuming flesh is not a crime... Does not make it ethically right though. There are lots of things that are "legal" but unjust. ***** And as far as "the" bible goes... I hope you're aware that this is not the keystone for everyone's philosophy? That others may have a different belief or a "gOd" that does not condone killing for any purpose. So Vickie... Is taking innocent life, when there are other options not to really "ok" with your God? Do you have evidence of such? Please do share... ;)

Hey Herne the Coward, Why don't you and your RALF (something I do when I'm feeling ill) compatriots come out from behind your rocks and get your message out with education and debate?I think I will do as Jim has promised but take it one step further. I'm going to email everyone I know this article and encourage them to up their meat consumption by 20%. I hope that gets stuck in your gullet Sir!

Kent - You might want to do a search on animal sanctuaries... Many are located in areas that are snowed in too... I don't think there are any ranchers helping them either.

Isn't it terrible though, that we've created these beings that can't fend for themselves? Every species nature made seems to do fine in the weather they were meant to live in. Sounds to me like animal ag has placed beings in this huge building, set it a fire then take the role of "heroes" for helping make it less hard for "saving" the animals --- All the while getting paid to do such.

Bottom line? You're not fooling me one bit. Sorry.

I am appalled of any terrorist attacks on US soil and more so to an industry of which I am a part of. Herne the hunter, I am extremely ashamed you condone these actions. I am not sure where you get your facts for believe whatever it is that you believe, but I am sure they are not statistical science based. Animal producers go to great lengths and jump through more hoops than you could ever imagine. I doubt you have ever stayed up all night to help any livestock with pregnancy or scooped snow out of feedbunks at 3 in the morning to provide a clean place to eat. There are no days off in livestock production. This industry isn’t for everyone. These are just hard working, passionate people that devote more than you could imagine to animal production. I am proud to be a livestock producer, and a U.S. citizen. Any terrorist attacks should be treated just like any terrorist attack. I have great sympathy for the Harris Farms.

Hi Blaine... If you're refering to the facts regarding slavery - But of course you should know that slavery was, for thousands of years, quite legal... I don't know why you're requesting verification from "science" --- But it certainly is a fact of history. *****

And you do know too I hope, that millions of people work very hard as well... Up at 3 in the morning - Never a day off, and so on. They do all this without being in the biz of marketing flesh. The hard work you expound upon is nothing new to anyone. Might I add that when ranchers and "producers" go about their jobs... It is to protect and foster profits. There are many sanctuaries and guardians of nonhumans that do exactly what you tout about, with the life of the being as their only purpose and reward. So what you do is nothing so special at all... It's done for money.

I don't understand how a family owned and operated business suck as Harris can be called a factory farm. this act did nothing to slow down animal cunsumption
based on the prices Harris was paying for Cattle on Tuesday. Destruction of property no matter who owns it is still a crime. This is a significant dollar amount and
they should be punished to the fulliest extent. I think we should order Harris Ranch Steaks and have friends over for the weekend.

As I sit here and read the comments from the overeducated idiots I get furious! All you alf idiots need to get your head examined. I background 2000 head of yearlings a year and our cattle are fed and cared for before we eat breakfast ourselves! They are hayed, grained, and checked everyday twice a day. You all have no earthly idea what we do everyday just to feed the world. With the drought and shortage of hay we will be lucky to show enough profit to buy a pack of gum! So while your in your big paying office jobs, or living off the government eating your nasty tofu burgers or soy burgers (which us farmers also produce) we will be out here treating our cattle feeding them and producing food fir the world while trying to make a living!

LOL!! These are some great comments, I needed a good laugh, so, thanks! I think the best part is that you are all going to up your “beef” intake. The funny part being, that you think it’s getting back at a few animal rights activists, but really you’re poisoning your self. 20%?? Well I guess you’re 20% more likely to get cancer and/or heart disease. You want them to come educate you? Try educating yourself instead of waiting for someone to do it for you. You want to hunt people down like a coyote? Hahaha, have fun with that. Seems like more and more hunting accidents happen each year. LOL! And your bible argument, well, if you believe in fairy tales, you’ll believe anything. Enjoy your day all, you’ve made me enjoy mine! Cheers!

FYI for all the Vegan Trolls hanging out here... Defending and/or offering Excuses for Violent Crimminals who Commit Violence as acts of Domestic Terrorism is tantamount to giving aide and comfort to the enemies of a Free Nation. Oh, and comparing ALF and ilk's actions to anti-slavery is an abomination that degrades and denigrates... not to mention making me and all reality-based victims of legitimate discrimination want to vomit.

"Isn't it terrible though, that we've created these beings that can't fend for themselves? Every species nature made seems to do fine in the weather they were meant to live in."

Bea, Isn't it amazing how someone trying to prove a point can criticize a farmer for not taking care of animals in winter weather, then take the opposite side and argue that the farmer shouldn't have to take care of the animal in harsh weather conditions? Let's be consistent please.

Please don't feed Bea anymore. She's a well-known activist way out there on the fringe and dialogue with her is not possible. I have to agree with her when she says "Every species nature made seems to do fine in the weather they were meant to live in." At least until some predator decides that specie as lunch and humanely dispatches it before eating it.

I hope the state of CA persues these criminals the same way they would hunt down any terrorist group, and not feel mercy on them because they have an ultra liberal cause. Us ranchers and farmers, have to abide by the laws of the land, and these terrorists should have to do the same.

Bea, I have searched the animal sanctuaries in my area, recently one of them made the news for starving the animals it was meant to save. I and several cattlemen in our area contribute annually to our local animal shelter, so can the "you don't care or show up"crap.
My intention is not to fool you, it is to out last you and continue my way of life as long as uneducated idiots like yourself let me. I come from a long, long line of survivors, so don't hold your breath. No wait, please do.

It's been several days. So where is Homeland Security and the FBI? Napolitano promised America that HSA would aggressively pursue Domestic Terrorists wherever found. Oh, and where are the public condemnations of violent terrorism by the peaceful Animal Rightists & Envioronmentalists like PETA, HSUS, GreenPeace, Sierra Club, etc., etc.? Both of these questions need further investigation and reporting. The liberal media is ambivalent and turn a blind eye to reporting anything bad about their darling Leftist causes, so it will be up to our industry and associated media to hold law enforcement and social activist co-dependents of ALF responsible. Stay at it!

Comments here run from appropriately disgusted with criminals beyond the pale of any human decency who commit terrorism, whether toward political ends, or animal rights ends.......and it ALL is truly criminal terrorism, isn't it???

The 'animal rights activists' are equally guilty as those commiting the terrorist acts for defending and sympathizing with those acts. Quite apparently, those commiting the terrorism would crow even more had there been a human injured or killed.

The level of hate against those of us who dare to have a faith based upon the Bible and belief in a triune God is dismaying, and a little frightening. Many of us are raising our children and/or grandchildren on these farms and ranches. Why should we have to fear for their safety and see that safety compromised by people who spout such hatred on sites such as this, toward farmers and ranchers?

I wish they would direct their actions towards the people who starve horses like the guy on the Louisiana farm or the lady in Saratoga or demand 1% of wagering revenue mandatory for TB rescue groups.

When a natural disaster or something happens to one farm or farmers the rest tend to band together to help one another out! So bravo you stupid alf pricks you've only made us stronger and maybe instead of 2000 head I may up my production!

I believe that the ranchers, and exporters need to be well armed for this type of action. These ranchers are growing not just America's food, but worldly exports also. Our animals whether at the ranches or in the transport trucks should be protected.
