MSNBC.com reports a fundraiser by Arizona lawmakers will begin Wednesday to begin building a fence along the 82-mile border between Arizona and Mexico.
Fundraising for the fence is facing mixed reactions with some property owners along the border reluctant to support the project. Some land owners and county sheriffs think the fence is not the solution and the federal government may not allow construction on its land.
Republican Gov. Jan Brewer signed legislation in April allowing the state to use inmate labor to build the fence and use money pulled in through the website to fund the $50 million project.
The construction materials and timing will be determined by the success of the fundraising.
Arizona Republican Sen. Steve Smith sponsored the bill and told MSNBC Arizona and other states support the project as a way to reduce the number of illegal aliens in the United States.
