Reward money has risen to $45,000 for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for killing a white bison on a ranch in Texas. Some Native American tribes consider white bison, which are exceedingly rare, a sacred and powerful religious icon.

According to news reports, the year-old bison, named Lightning Medicine Cloud, resided on a Lakota Buffalo Ranch owned by Arby Little Soldier, a great-great grandson of Sitting Bull. Little Soldier returned from a trip to find the animal had been killed and skinned. The calf’s dam, named Buffalo Woman, died the next day, possibly of poisoning.

Authorities from several Texas law-enforcement agencies are investigating the incident.
