In the 1980s, Lee Borck noticed a problem: Feedyards in central Kansas were getting fifty cents a hundredweight less for their cattle than western Kansas feedyards. “That didn’t seem right,” says Borck, who had recently purchased one of those central Kansas feedyards. He wanted to do something about it.
“I called together about 10 of my peers in central Kansas and said, ‘You know they’re bidding us less because we have smaller yards and fewer numbers available. Why don’t we put a group together to sell our cattle under one agreement? Nine of them said, ‘Let’s try it.’”
