Beef supplies in storage down 6 percent

Total pounds of beef in freezers were six percent lower than the previous month, however the latest data from the USDA shows in increase compared to the same month last year.

The slight increase above data from the end of August 2012 for beef supplies was not mimicked for pork supplies which were down one percent from the previous month and eight percent lower than the same time last year.

Overall red meat supplies in freezers were down three percent compared to the end of July and five percent lower than last year.

Frozen poultry supplies increased slightly above last month and are five percent higher than a year earlier.
