Citing high unemployment in the area, three California congressmen have submitted a letter to USDA Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack asking to reopen the Central California slaughterhouse.
The USDA suspended Central Valley Meat Company operations since Monday after footage revealed mistreated and sick cows led to slaughter. The letter states employees of the company are idle in a community already suffering from double-digit unemployment.
The price of beef in the region is also lower as the continuing investigation determines if any contaminated beef entered the food supply.
