The number of cattle and calves on feed for the slaughter market in Colorado feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 head or larger was estimated at 1,020,000 head as of December 1, 2012. The latest inventory was down 1 percent from November 1, 2012, and down 12 percent from the 1,160,000 on feed on December 1, 2011. Cattle feeders with 1,000 head or larger capacity marketed an estimated 155,000 head of fed cattle during November 2012. This was 3 percent below October 2012 marketings of 160,000 head, but 7 percent above a year ago. An estimated 150,000 cattle and calves were placed on feed during November, down 14 percent from a year ago and 23 percent below the October 2012 placements of 195,000. Of the number placed in November, 27 percent weighed less than 600 pounds, 27 percent weighed from 600 to 699 pounds, 20 percent weighed from 700 to 799 pounds, and 27 percent weighed 800 pounds and greater. Other disappearance for November, at 5,000 head, is unchanged from last month, but down 5,000 head from last year.
