The U.S. Department of Labor proposed a new regulation in early September regarding child labor for agricultural and nonagricultural employment under the Fair Labor Standards Act. Public input on the proposal was scheduled to close November 1, 2011, but U.S. Sens. Jerry Moran and Pat Roberts of Kansas and Ben Nelson of Nebraska, along with others, asked the administration to extend the comment period. The Obama administration complied with this request by extending the comment period to December 1, 2011.

Language in the proposed regulation would further limit the places, times and activities where children can work on and around farming operations. KLA staff will be further analyzing the regulation and preparing comments. Members are encouraged to watch future KLA newsletters for a detailed explanation of the regulation and offer comments before the December 1 deadline.
