Whew, I’m glad 2012 is over. Elections, drought, bickering in Washington, no farm bill. 2013 has to be better. Doesn’t it? Here are my fearless agriculture predictions for 2013.
January: Voters push Congress over a physical cliff because we’re just tired of it all.
February: Rains bring widespread smiles to farmers and ranchers across the Lone Star State.
March: Voters respond favorably to initiative in Midwest that requires Humane Society of the United States to spend 90 percent of their funds taking care of homeless animals.
April: A movement to take veganism mainstream is belayed by hankerings for hamburgers and fried chicken.
May: Natural, organic, local and modern food advocacy groups sue one another to determine who in fact grows “real food.”
June: Wal-Mart puts in a bid for the bankrupt Hostess Brands with plans to introduce “Winkies.”
July: Realizing how much food America wastes, trickle-down dining becomes the newest rage as families eat leftovers until there is nothing left over.
August: Farmers still awaiting Farm Bill action.
September: War over obesity is won as Americans use common sense, eat smaller portions and exercise more.
October: ABC News goes too far when it labels boiled asparagus as “Green Slime” in a vegetable expose.
November: Peterson Brothers named winner of American Idol.
December: Texas farmers and ranchers find a new tractor under the tree—red or green or any color in-between—compliments of Santa.
