The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM) this week unveiled a new website and a video to help ensure safety and responsibility in the use of medicated animal feeds.

The website, a component of CVM’s Animal Feed Safety System, provides links to information about safe feed and pet food for consumers, animal feeders, animal feed manufacturers, pet food and pet treat manufacturers, and ingredient suppliers. Links and other information fall under several categories for manufacturers, distributors and users of medicated feeds. The category headings include:

  • Seek ingredient approval
  • Manufacture animal feed
  • Learn about good animal feeding practices
  • Report a problem
  • Ship animal feed
  • Learn about the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA)
  • Get assistance

The new video from FDA/CVM focuses on safe use of medicated feeds and is primarily intended for producers. The video focuses on the importance of reading and following the label when using any medicated feed. It provides examples of feed labels and walks the viewer through the types of information on the label, explaining the importance of using the product in the appropriate species and class of livestock, for the right reason, at the right dosage, for the right amount of time and in accordance with specified withdrawal periods.
