Feedlot margins are rockin’ and rollin’ with a $24.12 per head increase for the week ending August 2, says the Sterling Beef Profit Tracker’s latest report. A year ago, feeders were in the red by $124.83, a far cry from last month’s $319.16 per head profit and last week’s jump to $381.70.

Fed cattle prices also continue to climb, modestly to $164.58 per hundredweight, up $1.24 per hundredweight from the previous week. The climb has seen significant gains since sitting at $119 per hundredweight a year ago and $157.75 per hundredweight last month. After declining mid last month, feeder steers are back on the rise to $221.87 per hundredweight. The $8.62 per hundredweight increase from the previous week is slightly lower than the $214.32 per hundredweight price last week, but higher than a year ago when feeder cattle were selling for $151.24.

Packers continue to make gains, up last week to $81.12 per head, just shy of $10 more per head in the previous week. This is significantly higher than last month when packers were making $47.75 per head and only $10.09 per head a year ago. The beef cutout value is also up last week, with the $261.33 price $8.64 higher than the previous week. This is well above the $245.82 price beef cutouts were bringing last month and the $185.31 a year ago.

Farrow-to-finish margins took another fall last week, dropping from $102.18 per head to $91.75 per head for the week ending August 1, according the Sterling Pork Profit Tracker. While the decrease is significant, it is still above the $104.81 per head price from a month ago, and much higher from the $12.68 price per head a year ago. The price for lean hogs is also down to $123.28 from the previous week’s $128.01.

Pork packer margins continue to increase, hitting $8.49 per head last week, well above the $5.26 per head price from the previous week. This is still ahead of a year ago when packers were losing $1.84 per head and a month ago when they were only making $2.37 per head. Pork cutout value also dropped last week from $132.91 to $129.73. The drop is below last month’s price of $132.88, but above a year ago when cutouts were  bringing $101.77.
