Feedlot margins continue a three-week skid down $35.21 per head from the previous week to $162.67 per head for the week ending August 23, says the Sterling Beef Profit Tracker’s latest release. This is the lowest price per head feedlot margins have brought in a significant time. While much higher from this time a year ago when feedlot margins were $59.53 per head in the red, they are much lower from this time a month ago when prices were sitting at $357.58 per head.

Fed cattle prices also continue to decline, slightly dropping from the previous week of $154.69 per hundredweight to $153.31 per hundredweight last week. This is below last month’s fed cattle prices of $163.34 per hundredweight, and more than the price from a year ago when they were bringing $123.00 per hundredweight. Feeder steer prices have increased from the previous week, up $2.69 per hundredweight to $220.49 per hundredweight last week. This continual increase has been building from last month’s price of $213.25 per hundredweight, and a year ago when fed cattle were bringing $155.99 per hundredweight.

Packers made another jump last week, moving up from $110.89 per head to $118.07 per head. This is well above a year ago when packers were making $14.62 per head and a month ago when they were at $72.95 per head. Beef cutout prices slipped from the previous week, moving from $255.63 per head down to $249.74 per head last week. A month ago, cutouts were sitting higher at $252.69 per head, and only $192.75 a year ago.

Farrow-to-finish margins continue to landslide, dropping from $61.74 per head in the previous week to $40.32 per head for the week ending August 22, says the Sterling Pork Profit Tracker report. Farrow-to-finish margins have tanked $61.82 per head from a month ago when prices were at $102.18 per head. However, this is much higher than a year ago when the price was $11.58 per head. Lean hogs also continue to skid lower, dropping from $109.97 in the previous week to $99.72 last week. This is close to the $94.10 price from a year ago, and lower than last month’s price of $128.01.

Porker packer margins have increased from the previous week’s dip of $6.60 per head, back up to $11.00 per head. A month ago, packers were making $5.15 per head, just under a year ago when the packer margin was $6.21 per head. Pork cutouts continue on a downward trend, moving from $116.00 in the previous week, to $107.54 last week. This time cutouts were bringing $132.91, and $100.79 a year ago.
