KANSAS CITY, Mo. ­­­– Holt 138X Sadie 226Z and C Notice Me Untapped 2200 ET topped the female show at the Western Nugget National Hereford Show Dec. 6-7 in Reno, Nev., while LED GKB Legend 108 ET and C Stockman 2059 ET won the bull show. Also during the show, George and Cheryl Colwell of Colwell Ranches in Payette, Idaho, and North Powder, Ore., were honored with the 2013 Lifetime Cattlemen Award. 

Tyler Cates, Modoc, Ind., judged the 192-head show and complimented Hereford breeders on the quality exhibited. He said the Hereford breed is in a very envious position right now, “It’s not very often that a breed’s commercial bull market is at its peak at the same time its junior show heifer market is at its peak. Those two things should make you proud as breeders as what you’ve done for the last 150 years producing functional cattle that will work in any environment.”

Holt 138X Sadie 226Z, by SB 54E 75R Fusion 138X ET, was chosen champion polled female after winning the spring yearling division. Owned by Emilee and Bennett Holt, Caldwell, Idaho, Sadie was a triple-crown winner in Reno also winning the champion owned and bred-and-owned titles in the junior show on Dec. 5.

Reserve champion polled female honors went to Gary and Kathy Buchholz, Waxahachie, Texas, with C 0134 Hometown Lady 3210 ET. She first won the spring heifer calf division and is by NJW 73S W18 Hometown 10Y ET.

In the horned show, C Notice Me Untapped 2200 ET came out on top after winning the junior yearling division. She is owned by Chloe Castle, Rush Springs, Okla., and is a Feb. 2012 daughter of TH 89T 743 Untapped 425X ET.

Reserve in the horned female show and champion in the junior calf division was GKB 88X Ida Kay 8A ET, owned by Gary and Kathy Buchholz and Erick Schmidt, Gonzales, Texas. She is a Jan. 4, 2013, daughter of NJW 98S R117 Ribeye 88X ET.

Colyer Herefords, Bruneau, Idaho, Pablo Martin Y Herrera, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Ned and Jan Ward, Sheridan, Wyo., exhibited champion horned bull C Stockman 2059 ET for the second year in a row. He is a Jan. 6, 2012, son of NJW 98S R117 Ribeye 88X ET. Reserve champion horned bull, GKB 88X Laramie B293, won the fall calf division. Owned by Gary & Kathy Buchholz, Laramie is a Dec. 10, 2012, son of NJW 98S R117 Ribeye 88X ET.  

In the polled bull show, senior division winner LED GKB Legend 108 ET was slapped champion. He is owned by Gary & Kathy Buchholz. Reserve champion polled bull, DF 9001 Maestro 907 1212, is a March 10, 2012 son of DF Sweet Willie 9001. He first won the yearling bull division and is owned by Madison and Meagan Dewar, Bakersfield, Calif.

Colyer Herefords earned many banners including premier horned and polled exhibitor and horned premier breeder. The polled premier breeder was Kari and Brooke Brumley, Orovada, Nev. Colyer Herefords with Gary & Kathy Buchholz won first-place get of sire with a group sired by NJW 98S R117 Ribeye 88X ET. Best six head went to High Desert Cattle Co., Canyon City, Ore.

Colyer Herefords also won the pen show, judged by Chris Gansberg, Markleeville, Calif., George Colwell, North Powder, Ore., and Dale Micheli, Fort Bridger, Wyo. JBB/AL Herefords, Bliss, Idaho, was reserve champion.

The 109-entry junior show judged by Montie Soules, Omaha, Neb., was Dec. 5. Reserve champion bred-and-owned female honors went to Brandt and Lane Downing, Terrebonne, Ore., with DCC Double Take 202 by GO 3196 Advance T9. Reserve champion owned heifer was Brooke Brumley with BF 144U Somethingsweet 2106 ET by TH 75J 243R Bailout 144U ET.

In the bull show, Brandt and Lane Downing won the champion banner with DCC Double Down 205. He’s a March 2012 son of UPS TCC Nitro 1ET. Reserve was Kallie Goss, Redmond, Ore., with KK New Extreme 123 by KK New Invention 980.
