KLA: Animal activist group supports GIPSA rule

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) supports the Grain Inspection, Packers and Stockyards Administration’s (GIPSA) proposed rule to restrict cattle marketing options for ranchers and feeders. In a statement posted on its web site, HSUS suggests, “By providing greater transparency and greater access to open and competitive markets, these regulations will help ensure the sustainability of family farmers and their traditional animal husbandry practices.”

Ironically, ballot initiatives promoted by HSUS in California, Arizona and Florida have restricted some scientifically proven animal production practices. HSUS funds initiatives to reduce meat, dairy and egg consumption with dollars collected from donors who are led to believe they are contributing to programs benefiting companion animal shelters.

KLA, NCBA and many other groups strongly oppose the GIPSA rule because it would jeopardize the use of private marketing agreements due to the potential for litigation against buyers who must justify any premiums or deviations from “standard” prices.
