The number of cattle on feed on September 1, 2012 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.17 million head, down 2 percent from a year ago but up 1 percent from August 1, 2012.
Placements during August totaled 430,000 head, down 17 percent from August 2011 and down 20 percent from July 2012. This is the lowest August placements since 1995.
Marketings during August totaled 410,000 head, down 14 percent from August 2011 and down 1 percent from July 2012. Other disappearance was 10,000 head, down 5,000 head from both last year and the previous month.
The percent of August placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 19 percent; 600-699 pounds, 24 percent; 700-799 pounds, 28 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 29 percent.
