Although it isn't immediately obvious due to the crown logo, the Kansas City Royals aren't named after monarchs at all. Instead, the baseball team is named after a livestock show that is held in the area called the American Royal.
When the baseball team was created, a contest was held to decide a name for the city's new baseball team. Sanford Porte, a bridge engineer from Overland Park, Kan., a suburb of Kansas City, won the contest with his idea to name the team after the livestock show, Chris Chase reported for USA Today.
The American Royal livestock show is still held in Kansas City, and the baseball team named after the show is headed to the World Series.
