Calling All BQA Award Nominees!
Applications for the fourth annual checkoff-funded National Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) Award are now being accepted. The National BQA Award will recognize one outstanding beef producer and one dairy producer that best demonstrate animal care and handling principles as part of the day-to-day activities on their respective operations.
Two National BQA award winners will be selected by a committee of representatives from universities, state beef councils and affiliated groups. Nominations can be submitted by any organization, group, or individual on behalf of a U.S. beef producer. Individuals and families may not nominate themselves, though the nominees are expected to be involved in the preparation of the application. For further information about the award or to download the application, please visit http://www.bqa.org.

Millennials' Safe Place to Tell Their Beef Story
The Millennial generation (born between 1980 and 2000) represents an important consumer demographic and, as a result, research was conducted using a social media outlet to determine top-line issues related to beef for this age group.
An online discussion group was held on Facebook with a group of Millennials that met specific criteria in order to gauge their attitudes toward beef, as well as their beef shopping habits, cooking knowledge and preferences and concerns about beef.
The results of this qualitative research demonstrate that this age group enjoys and likes beef, but they need permission to include it in their meal choices. Results also indicate Millennials need to be provided more information related to beef selection and preparation.

Latest World Cancer Report
On Sunday, May 22, the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) released a special report about bowel (colorectal) cancer, concluding that eating red and processed meats increases risk of the disease. (A red-meat summary extracted directly from the full report is available HERE.)
WCRF is recommending consumers limit red meat consumption to 2.5 ounces per day and avoid processed meat.
Your beef checkoff has posted a media statement on BeefNutrition.org, highlighting checkoff-funded research that concludes that the available epidemiological evidence is not supportive of a causal association between red meat and colorectal cancer.
