A pair of mobile applications offer convenient access to information and decision tools for beef and dairy producers.

Smartphone The AI Cowculator was developed by University of Florida animal scientist G. Cliff Lamb, PhD., with support from Zoetis Animal Health. The Cowculator is a decision aid application to help beef cattle producers or veterinarians compare the costs and benefits of artificial insemination (AI)versus natural service to manage reproduction in their operations.

The app uses actual producer inputs and predicted cattle values to generate a partial budget to determine the gain or loss per cow if artificial insemination were to replace natural service.

The app’s description notes that estrus synchronization and fixed-timed AI can enhance the economic viability and productivity of beef cattle operations by shortening calving seasons, improving calf uniformity, providing earlier births and producing heavier calves at weaning. These systems do, however entail costs including synchronization supplies, labor, time, and facilities, which need to be measured in relation to the cost of purchasing and maintaining bulls.

In addition, to calculating economic feasibility of artificially inseminating cattle based on a number of inputs specific to an operation, the Cowculator contains a locator for AI products and services along with additional resources and a link to the AI Cowculator social media. The app is available for the iPhone and iPad. Click here for more information.

Another free app from Zoetis, iVetConnect, app is designed for use by veterinarians, producers and the Zoetis field force as a single-source repository of information about all Zoetis products and useful resources for animal health professionals.

Some of the features of iVetConnect include the ability to:

View, print or email Prescribing Information and Material Safety Data Sheets for any of the more than 300 Zoetis products.

Connect to Zoetis to report an adverse event or human exposure, or ask a question about a product. One tap connects to the call center or provides the telephone number.

Visit U.S. Zoetis websites, as well as the websites of relevant professional associations.

Connect to relevant U.S. emergency hotlines, such as those for animal poison control, human poison control, and the Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank.

iVetConnect is offered free of charge and available to veterinarians in the US. It is available for use on Android mobile devices. Click here for more information.
