The term Holstein is not often associated with the entire birth to harvest process. Roy Brown, CEO of Cattle Empire LLC. is making the connection between the term and the process something people are trying to replicate.
“Most yards that feed Holsteins buy them when they weigh 300 to 500 pounds; they won’t do the calf part — where you can incur the biggest death loss. You’ve got to be good. There have been several yards in the last four years that tried to imitate what we do and have given up.” says Brown.
Brown has also made sure that the high number of calves on his ranch are healthy by hiring Dave Sjeklocha, DVM, to serve as Operations Manager of Animal Health & Welfare.
