Texas Cattle on Feed down 7 percent

Cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in Texas feedlots with capacity of 1,000 head or more totaled 2.72 million head on January 1, 2013, down 7 percent from a year ago. According to the monthly report released by the Texas Field Office, the estimate was up 1 percent from the December 1, 2012 level. Producers placed 415 thousand head in commercial feedlots during December, up 4 percent from a year ago but down 11 percent from November.

Texas commercial feeders marketed 380 thousand head during December, down 10 percent from 2011 and down 8 percent from November.

On January 1, there were 2.35 million head of cattle and calves on feed in the Northern High Plains, 86 percent of the state's total. The number on feed across the area was down 5 percent from last year but up 1 percent from the December 1 total.

December placements in the Northern High Plains totaled 362 thousand head, down 12 percent from the November total. Marketings were down 7 percent from last month to 337 thousand head.
