Livestock producers will have until at least early March to comply with the USDA’s new Animal Disease Traceability rule, as it has not yet been published in the Federal Register.
The agency announced the final rule on December 20, 2012, with a planned date of December 28 for publishing it in the Federal Register. The rule would take effect 60 days after publishing, on February 26, 2013. Last week, however, the agency announced it would delay publishing the rule, and a statement on the USDA/APHIS traceability website now says it will do so in until early January. As of Friday morning, January 4, the rule had not yet appeared in the Federal Register. If the rule is published on January 4, it will take effect on March 5, 2013.
