Norbrook, Inc., announced they have received FDA approval on new Tandem Pen injection for the highly cost-effective treatment of penicillin-susceptible microorganisms associated with bacterial pneumonia (shipping fever complex), upper respiratory infections and Blackleg.

According to Chip Whitlow, Marketing Manager for Norbrook, Inc, “Tandem Pen is a highly syringeable, easy to re-suspend, combination of sterile penicillin G benzathine and penicillin G procaine that provides beef producers with a Beef Quality Assurance friendly subcutaneous (SC) route of injection. Beef producers now have a new choice with this combination penicillin-based product to help treat and offset the production costs associated with bacterial pneumonia associated with Streptococcus spp., Actinomyces pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus and upper respiratory infections associated with Actinomyces pyogenes. The product is also approved for effective treatment against Blackleg caused by the gram-positive bacterium Clostridium chauvoei.”

According to Whitlow, new Tandemä Pen should be administered to beef cattle at 2 mL per 150-lb. body weight via subcutaneous injection only.  Tandemä Pen is available without prescription in multi-dose 100 mL, 250 mL and 500 mL vials.

Observe label directions and withdrawal times. For use in beef cattle only. Do not use in calves to be processed for veal. Treatment must be limited to two (2) doses. For subcutaneous injection only. Allergic or anaphylactic reactions, sometimes fatal, have been known to occur in animals hypersensitive to penicillin and procaine. Therefore, animals should be kept under close observation for at least one-half hour following injection. See product labeling for full product information.
