If a person could figure out a market, even just the cattle market, it might be better than winning the big lottery! It seems that about the time it makes sense something triggers it to do the opposite or else some obscure trajectory. Over time, just like anything else, it starts to make a picture that might be understood, but of course hindsight is 20/20.
According to whatever media a person follows, the recession is getting over or it’s continuing! It is almost amazing how different people see things and react to them. A person could probably find any group they wanted to that thought the same way and looked at things the same, but there would sure be a lot of different groups!
The market could go higher or it could go lower. That’s the stock answer most of the time, and it about as right as anything. What makes it move either way will be supply, demand, perception and reaction. Some folks will not be bothered by a mosquito on their arm while others will surely swat it or smash it if they’re able.
It sure seems that many things are either good or bad depending on how they are perceived, yet perception can be altered. The billion dollar advertising industry and campaign speeches seem to be proof of that! Most folks would agree that it gets darker when someone turns out the lights, but there could be a thousand reasons why the lights turned off! Everyone seems to agree we have a great cattle market, but why it goes up or down when it does is sure guesswork.
Moisture, sunshine and warmth make for a lot of growth and good feelings. Looking around Oklahoma, a person might think it was June with all the trees, plants and grass turned green. The only sign it’s not June is that most of the wheat is also still green! Of course, at the rate it is growing, it won’t be long until that changes!
It sure sounds like harvest will come early this year! Of course, there are quite a few things that can change that, and over the course of history it’s pretty well been in the same time frame every year. An early harvest will be good or bad, depending on a person’s point of view, but if the moisture keeps coming the summer will look a lot better for it!
There is quite a difference in weight classes in the cattle market! It’s astounding that cattle a few pounds over the perceived magic number could be $50.00 to $100.00 a head different in value on a given day. It sure seems like there are huge discounts out there for a few extra pounds or by handling a heifer! Over time that will change, but it’s usually easier to get through the door before the crowd comes.
Get in the action! Go to the auction! Raise some cattle!
