Feeding losses increase significantly, packers slip, too

Cattle feeding margins declined more than $55 per head last week, leaving average losses more than $87 per head, according to the Sterling Beef Profit Tracker.

Beef packers saw their margins decline $12 per head on the week leaving losses at more than $88 per head. The Sterling Beef Profit Quotient declined 170 points for the week and the industry profitability index is now negative 288.1, according to estimates developed by Sterling Marketing, Inc., Vale, Ore. A month ago the Sterling Beef Profit Quotient was a negative 66.7.

Pork producer margins declined $14 per head last week, with margins now at a negative $23.33 per hog marketed. Negotiated cash hog prices declined $1.25 per hundredweight last week. Pork packer margins improved $4.08 per head for the week, leaving profits at $9 per head, according to the Sterling Pork Profit Tracker.

A year ago cattle feeders sold cash cattle at $124.50 per hundredweight, resulting in profits of $48.71 per head. Last year cash hogs fetched $85.47 per hundredweight, resulting in profits of $7.65 per head.

The Sterling Beef and Pork Profit Trackers are calculated using actual weekly prices for both cattle and hogs, feed costs, beef and pork cutout prices, drop credits and other factors that influence profit margins.

The Sterling Beef Profit Tracker for the week ending Nov. 10:

  • Average feedyard margins: -$87.97 per head.
  • Average packer margins: -$88.59 per head.
  • Sterling Profit Quotient: -288.1.

The Sterling Pork Profit Tracker for the week ending Nov. 9:

  • Average farrow-to-finish margins: -$23.33 per head.  
  • Average pork packer margins: $8.99 per head.
