KLA: Vilsack in Manhattan today to deliver Landon Lecture

U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack will be in Kansas today to talk about agriculture, renewable energy and the need for research. His remarks will come during the spring 2012 Landon Lecture at Kansas State University titled “Why America Needs Agriculture.”

Vilsack’s press secretary would not confirm if he would address the recent controversy surrounding Lean Finely Textured Beef. Although Vilsack has emphasized the product is safe, wholesome and nutritious, he announced in March that USDA will identify products offered through the National School Lunch Program that contain Lean Finely Textured Beef and, where possible, offer alternatives. KLA sent a letter to Vilsack late last month suggesting USDA more vigorously defend the safety and process of producing Lean Finely Textured Beef.

Secretary Vilsack will speak in McCain Auditorium on the K-State campus at 10:30 a.m. The lecture will be attended by students, faculty, alumni and the general public, including a group of past KLA presidents and KLA Executive Vice President Dee Likes.
