Kansas Cattle on Feed down 5 percent

The number of cattle on feed on February 1, 2013 in Kansas feedlots with 1,000 head or more capacity totaled 2.11 million head, down 5 percent from a year ago but unchanged from January 1, 2013. This is the lowest February 1 inventory since 1999.

Placements during January totaled 4 30,000 head, up 5 percent from a year ago and up 18 percent from December 2012. Marketings during January totaled 415,000 head, unchanged from January 2012 but down 2 percent from December 2012.

Other disappearance was 15,000 head, unchanged from a year a go but down 5,000 head from the previous month. The percent of January placements by weight was: under 600 pounds, 16 percent; 600 - 699 pounds, 22 percent; 700 - 799 pounds, 35 percent; and 800 pounds or heavier, 27 percent.
