CALGARY, ALBERTA - Smashburger, America's fastest growing "better burger" restaurant, is introducing their fresh approach to burgers to the Canadian market, opening their first location in Calgary on Wednesday, May 2.

Smashburger will offer gourmet burgers that are smashed fresh and served delicious, along with MacKay's milkshakes, a variety of sides and regional menu items crafted specifically for the Calgary market. A second Calgary location is scheduled to open in Royal Oak in June 2012.

Each Calgary Smashburger location will feature a regional Alberta-inspired menu to showcase local suppliers and flavours. The regional menu will feature homegrown tastes including the Calgary Smashburger and Calgary chicken sandwich, each topped with an exclusive Canadian-inspired seasoning, grilled onions, pepper jack cheese, applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato and Dijon-mayonnaise on a Kaiser roll. In true Canadian fashion, the menu will also offer traditional poutine Smashfries, Mushroom poutine Smashfries with garlic sauteed mushrooms and a Saskatoon Berry milkshake using Cochrane's own MacKay's ice cream.

"We've had great success in the U.S. and consistently hear positive feedback from visiting Canadians," says David Prokupek, Chairman & CEO of Smashburger. "We felt Calgary was an ideal market to launch our first Canadian locations due to the thriving economy and burgeoning food scene."

Recently named "America's Most Promising Company" by Forbes Magazine, at Smashburger, the secret is in the "smash". Smashburgers start with 100 per cent fresh, Certified Angus Beef that is "smashed" onto a 400 degree flat grill to sear in the juicy flavour. To further the "better burger" experience, the burgers are then served on a toasted artisan bun and finished with a selection of high quality toppings.

Smashburger customers can also enjoy a selection of marinated grilled or crispy chicken sandwiches, grilled and split hot dogs, and fresh tossed signature salads, along with a variety of sides including rosemary and garlic-seasoned Smashfries, fried pickles, haystack onions and veggie frites (flash-fried and seasoned carrot sticks and green beans). The restaurant will also serve a selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages including local beers, wine, and hand-spun milkshakes in frosted mugs.

"We look forward to introducing our premium products to the Calgary market," says Smashburger Founder & Chief Concept Officer Tom Ryan. "We can't wait to hear the local reaction to our "Alberta" inspired menu items. We hope they love them as much as we do!"
