The dismal economy is contributing to abandonment of unwanted horses around the country, according to a New York Times article. Unable to afford feed and veterinary care, owners increasingly turn the animals loose on public lands or simply neglect them. The situation has reopened the debate over horse slaughter in the United States. The last remaining horse-slaughter plants closed in 2007, but several states including Missouri, Montana and North and South Dakota are looking at ways to bring slaughterhouses back.
